The Whistle Stop at The American Cafe'

Stop by here on our way home from Pennsylvania. Great food and great service. Will have to stop again next time we travel through.

Very cute and historic atmosphere, great local find, and superb service. I got the shrimp and grits and thought it was amazing. My husband's hamburger steak wasn't up to his par but I hope that's just a one-off. I'm not completely convinced our meal was worth the price, but they definitely know what they're doing so it's a nice splurge place. Overall, it was a great experience and we'll definitely be going again.

FABULOUS! Love the fried green tomatoes. Everything I have had there is awesome. It's a cool place nestled right in downtown Travelers Rest.

We so enjoyed dinner here tonight. Service and food were great. The atmosphere was excellent for a gathering of beloved family. The special tonight was chicken parm ... and the serving was generous enough for my husband & I to split an order. The fried green tomatoes were ordered for an appetizer where unbeatable!

Wonderful! Food & ambiance!

I went there with my wife, 3 year old, and 1 year old for lunch. The waiter smiled at my children and treated us with all the attention we needed. He got my kids to laugh also. He even turned on the train and sounds for my 3 year old and she loved it. The food was amazing, I had the pulled pork burger and my wife the chicken sandwich. (Their made in house chips are amazing btw!) All in all it was a great experience, great food, great service and the place looks amazing. Can't wait to go again!

I'll just say Oh Emm Gee!!!! The collards we're cooking perfect! Mac & Cheese was awesome!!! Blue Cheese mashed potatoes, WOW!!! Fried Okra, Yumm!!! Steak, shrimp 🍤, and sausage was amazing! I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

The sandwiches, burgers, popcorn chicken, fries & grits were all amazing! Kids loved the train & that the kids meals came in trains!

The staff is Very nice, clean and fast service. My husband love the drinks. The waiter was ni e and very helpful.

Very disappointing stop. Fried toms were sad and the staff wasn't incredibly knowledgeable about much. Not to mention they haven't even seen the movie Fried Green Tomatoes!

So neat. Train decor, whistle and tracks. Had a BBQ bacon cheeseburger, which was delicious. Hope to go back again. Highly recommend it! Great

Kitschy with charm. Food was ok, did not think much of their grits.

This was our first visit. We dined on the rooftop. Our service was great. We ordered fried pickles that were so good! My food was great especially the mac-n-cheese and okra! My daughter loved her kids meal that came in train box with a toy! Bathrooms were nice and clean. All the staff was very attentive and nice. Would def return if in the area again!

Yum! I've been here 3 times and everytime its delicious. The servers that I've had have all been attentive and sweet. We've tried several things, the Asian chicken wrap YUM, the pig wings and Brussel sprouts i could make a meal out of alone! The last time I went I had the hamburger steak. We've had the braised ribs, a blt, and the pizza was so good! I definitely recommend eating here at least once. You won't regret it.

This was an experience of rich history for our family. A very cute cafe that used to be a train stop, filled with history while serving good old traditional food. We loved it here and a very worthwhile stop for the tired traveler.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting. Kids will love the train that circles the wall. The entire staff was friendly and inviting and the food was amazing. We split a buffalo chicken wrap and cheeseburger pizza. Another customer saw my wrap and wanted to know what it was. She ordered the same and said it was delicious, I had to agree. Can't wait to go back and trying something else because everything sounds good on the menu.

Delicious. I really wanted some BBQ, but after seeing the menu, I decided on the buffalo chicken wrap and was not disappointed. I also opted for the sweet potato fries and they were just right. Can't wait to visit again and actually try other items.

Neat atmosphere based on trains. My waitress was polite and prompt. The menu reminded me somewhat of southern comfort food with the inclusion of pizza. I have had the shrimp and grits here before and they are by far the best thing on the menu. They do have some heat so be cautious.

The food and service here are always wonderful! They have a great menu with something for everyone! From pasta to brick oven pizza to salads! Their fried green tomatoes are to die for! You can sit either in the main restaurant or up on the rooftop. The inside is comfy with plenty of booths, tables, and bar space. The rooftop is open but has many fans to combat the southern heat in the summer. It’s overall a pleasant place and well worth the visit when you are in the area!

While visiting here from Fort Lauderdale, my close friends suggested dinner and drinks at The Whistle Stop at the American Cafe. Being a warm Friday evening, we decided to dine on the rooftop. The staff are very professional and courteous (thanks Toby), the live music was great (Dan James is excellent), and the food was absolutely delicious. Based on Toby's suggestion, I had the shrimp and grits. Fantastic! Do try this place! You will not be disappointed!

Great food, curtious staff, Inside outside dinning.In a great area.

It took 45 min to get our burger and a drink refill. When we got our burger, it was very small sitting on top of a very large bun. I had to rip the bun from around the small patty bc it was nothing but bread. The size of the burger should have been cooked for a kid. We received poor service from the younger employees. The sweet potato fries are good - adding a star for that.

We wanted to like this place, but it is over rated. This was our second trip, and encountered one rude waitress, inattentive service, no availability of anything fried, 20 minute wait before any orders could be entered (whatever that means), 2 other tables seated long after us who got their food before we even placed our orders, mediocre pricey food, 2 hour visit. Yet the place wasn't even close to crowded, as there were several tables available.There are too many good places to eat to bother with this one again.

Really like this place... Very relaxed atmosphere... Warm fireplace with a nice Christmas tree in the corner. Menu has as little of every thing... My favorite item is the chop steak..really a cut above the rest... Service has always been attentive and friendly.. They seem to have a full service bar with a couple of TV's.

The food was excellent and plenty of it. The service was good, and the rustic ambience completes the experience. I had beef short ribs and the Mrs had shrimp and grits.

Nostalgic fun place with a long history of great food and fantastic service. Lots of variety for a small cafe. The deserts are made from scratch and well worth the extra calories. The hot dogs are Detroit style coney dogs and being from Detroit and Flint, Michigan, I can vouch for the authentic taste. Not sure if they use Koegel hot dogs, but they are very good none the less. If you are ever in Travelers Rest, SC, Whistle Stop at The American Cafe is well worth the stop.

Wonderful little spot in Travelers Rest, the food is great, I highly recommend the short rib sandwich, the flavors mixed with a tasty bark on the ribs are amazing.

I had friends come from out of town and we rode bikes from Greenville downtown to this restaurant at the suggestion of the bike rental employees. We are not an athletic group and the ride was beautiful but challenging. The service and hospitality we received at Whistle Stop was EXCELLENT. It was a cute store with delicious food. I recommend it for all you weary bikers out there! Thank you Whistle Stop. You gave us the boost we needed to make it back down the trail.😜💕

Very neatly decorated restaurant with friendly staff. I had the chicken salad sandwich with fries. It was delicious. They have a wide variety of food on their menu. I would definitely recommend this place.

These guys have the best shrimp and gritsand I love her fried Green tomatoes. I recommend this place because it's my hometown and the food is really good.

good food. a little pricey, which no big deal. only complaint is you can NOT get a burger or sandwich during dinner hours. lunch only, then they move on to another menu. we were told no choice.

Good food at a reasonable price and friendly service!

I occasionally like a good hot dog with chili. Unfortunately, both had almost no flavor. Other comments from my group were that the beef in the stew was chewy and the sauce on the BBQ burger was almost overpowering. The onion 'rails' were good. This was my second time at Whistle Stop and I cannot recommend it.Just to clarify - I had the Junior's Original, not the Coneys
